Racer Session #396 | Andria Nicodemou | October 15, 2017

*Due to technical issues, this session was recorded in two video segments and one audio segment. We are sorry for this inconvenience!*

Greetings, Racers!

This Sunday, we are very excited to be hosting Andria Nicodemou, a visiting friend based in Boston. Andria is a multifaceted musician, improviser, composer and teaching artist from Cyprus, specializing in vibraphone. Her music is characterized as an ‘open-ended’ play where movement, theatricality and sound are equally important. She has been always exploring and going beyond the conventional music boundaries, searching for new sounds and extending the vibraphone sound techniques.

Andria has worked in diverse interdisciplinary art projects, with dancers and visual artists in Europe, USA and Canada and she was a special guest at the London Improvisers Orchestra and the Royal Improvisers Orchestra in Amsterdam. She has collaborated with musicians such as Joe Morris, Anthony Colema, Gerald Cleaver, Tayler Ho Bynum, Tatsuya Nakatani, Ab Baars, Anne La Berge, Guilermo Gregorio, Marc Sanders, Ingrid Laubrock, Ikue Morri, among others. She is a graduate from Corfu University in Greece in Classical Percussion and has received her Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory in Boston, where she lives the last few years.

Chris Icasiano, a founding member of Table & Chairs who will be joining her on drums tonight, had this to say of Andria:

"I first heard Andria a couple years ago in New York when Bad Luck was on tour and was immediately struck by her presence and imaginative approach to the vibraphone. I had never heard the instrument like that before and I knew we had to play together."

The Racer Session will be the final performance of a week long string of shows and a culmination of the ideas that emerge from that timeframe. They will be additionally joined by Kelsey Mines on bass. So make sure that you get out to Cafe Racer this Sunday at 8pm to support and check out this amazing music!
