There is an idea that music can be broken down into layers: primary, secondary and tertiary. In and ensemble with 3 or fewer players, these relationships can be made very clear. For the open session, I encourage everyone to play short (roughly 5 minute) duos and trios with each individual focusing on clearly defining, through their playing, their relationship to the other parts in any given moment.
