Racer Sessions

Sundays, 8-10pm at Cafe Racer in Seattle, WA

Kate Olson - August 12, 2012

Lately (and by lately, I mean most of my life), I’ve been fascinated with motivic improvisation, and motivic development over the course of an entire solo. This installment of the Racer Session is centered around the material in a couple of Bartok piano exercises that I’ve arranged for saxophone quartet. The idea is for us to use that material as the basis for our improvisations, and to look at motivic development as a tonal rather than rhythmic concept. I encourage anyone who reads this before coming to the session to bring a chunk or two of written music that they could submit to folks in the session to use as fodder for improvisations after we’re done with our presentation.  The quartet will be Neil Welch, Jacob Zimmerman, Greg Sinibaldi, and myself.
